- : I can understand this, but this leads me to a question. I know that for
- : desktop customizations I basically have 2 choices when reinstalling a new
- : version of the OS. a) Start from scratch, b) Hope that something like
- : WPSBKUP works across versions. What about customizations that consist of
- : adding new files. For example, I may have added a few new .DLL files, or
- : customized my WIN.INI file, or added a couple of utilities...
-
- I never conciously add anything to the disk with OS/2 on. I have DLL,
- HELP, PSFONTS, etc directories on other partitions for extra stuff,
- and if I spot anything else adding DLLs to system directories I move
- them out. One major reason for this is that as my OS/2 partition fills
- I run out of swap space, but clean upgrade path is another factor.
-
- However, windows applications (well Ami Pro) seem to insist on
- putting .INI files in \OS2\MDOS\WINOS.
-
- : While some things can easily be added to directories on a different disk,
- : the logical place for a lot of this stuff seems to be the directory tree
- : containing the operating system. This of course gets destroyed when you
- : reformat.
-
- : Has anyone worked out a "perfect" solution to this problem? Writing every
- : little change on a piece of paper just doesn't sound realistic.
-
- If we had (symbolic) links in the OS/2 file system then things could
- be nicer as the UNIX (or at least SUNOS) approach could be taken.
- Here the system partition /usr is (or should be) treated as being read only
- with symbolic links to the /var directory structure (which is on another
- partition) for things that may change (like spool directories etc).
- Hence the OS can be upgraded by reformatting /usr and installing the
- new version with the links to /var and automatically all the customization
- directories are still there.
-
- Keeping directories on a seperate partition for added DLLs etc is
- a half way house to this regime as the symbolic link is handled by
- the path lists in CONFIG.SYS.
