- Does anybody have an Archie Technologies computer? I have a 386-25 with 8 meg
- of ram (originally 2). I purchased the machine in 1990 and have upgraded the
- BIOS. I am having all sorts of trouble getting Windows 3.1 to run on it in
- a stable mode.
-
- Problem 1: If I try to load Smartdrv with no parameters I get the message back:
- "Error loading USER.EXE" and I am obviously back in DOS. If I tell it to use
- only 512K memory for Windows it will allow me to load Windows but it is still
- unstable.
-
- Without Smartdrv I can get into Windows but still have problems. They tend to
- fall into two catagories. The first is a message concerning "invalid true
- type fonts". I am using only fonts from major packages: the add on package
- from MS and PrintShop Deluxe for Windows. The problem is sporadic. It happens
- regularly in Quicken 2.0 but rarely in Word For Windows.
-
- I also get a lot of errors in some Windows Programs. Few to none in Notepad
- Write, Visual Basic etc. More in Excel and I can not even run Access. The
- programs come back with messages such as "Error in " some exe or dll. The
- filespec is usually a file from the program I am trying to run although some
- time it is Kernel.exe or GDI.exe.
-
- I've tried simplifying my config.sys & autoexec.bat to match windows resource
- kit recommendations but no change.
-
- The few DOS programs I use run like a charm. These are games and they are
- the newer memory intensive ones with lots of graphics.
-
- So I really think my problem is in windows and probably specific to my
- maching. Does anybody out there have an Arche computer who can try to
- help?
