- I am sure somebody has asked this question already, but could anyone
- suggest any good TeX/LaTeX dvi previewer for windows 3.1 ?
-
- I tried to use dvimswin and I find it a little cumbersome (actually I never
- got it to work, to be explicit). I would not mind purchasing one, although
- anonymous ftp is obviously preferred.
-
- Thanks in advance

- Get DVIWindo from Y&Y. It allows you to preview DVI files calling for
- scalable fonts --- such as Adobe Type 1 and TrueType. (In fact, DVIWindo is
- the only application supporting TrueType fonts in TeX on the PC.)
- Preview at any scale, not just a select few for which bitmap fonts exist.
-
- You can use Computer Modern fonts, or finally break away from Computer Modern.
- There are something like 15,000 fonts in Type 1 format, plus hundreds in
- TrueType format, and other scalable font formats supported in Windows.
-
- DVIWindo prints to anything with a Windows printer driver including some fax
- boards. Includes ATM. Shows previews in inserted EPSF figures. DVIWindo is
- fast: turns a page in a second or two.
-
- Allows copying to clipboard and pasting into other applications (typeset
- hairy math in TeX, then paste the result into WYSIWYG application!).
-
- Supports the TEN most popular figure insertion schemes. Has \specials
- for colored text, colored rules, reverse video. Support the TPIC \specials
- for device independent graphics. Has \specials for insertion of TIFF images.
-
- Has string search capability. Also provides hyper text linkage.
- (Combine the colored text for high-lighting and hyper text linkage
- for making a technical manual with glossary!)
-
- Quality rendering on screen, unlike scaled bitmaps. Good for
- electronic publishing, were document is actually read on screen
- (and may never get printed).
-
- Can color code fonts for debugging font selection macros. Identify
- a font by clicking on a character. Create TeX metric files for any
- scalable font in Windows, including TrueType fonts.
-
- Two page spreads, `greeked' text for rapid checking of page layout.
- And lots of other features not found in other DVI `previewers'.
-
-
- Disclaimer: respondent has connections with Y&Y (obviously :-)
-
-
- Y&Y are the `TeX without BitMaps' people (see ad in TUGboat):
-
- Y&Y makes DVIPSONE, DVIWindo, and fonts
- - for use with TeX mostly -
- in fully hinted Adobe Type 1 format.
