- I'm trying to install (October's) NT, and at the point where the kernel
- starts up for the first time, I get:
-
- Fatal system error: 0x0000000A
-
- IRQL expected to be less or equal.
-
- appearing on the screen after a short fraction of a second.
-
- A call to Microsoft's UK support people elicited the response `You've
- got your network card jumpered wrong'. Well, I don't have a network
- card, but (at the time) I agreed with them that the message seemed to
- relate to interrupt conflicts. So I disabled or physically removed
- everything except the keyboard and disc controller, and still got the
- same message.
-
- From the tenor of their reaction, I get the impression that this is a
- common message, but all they've done is forward my report (including 14
- pages of MSD output!) to the States. Which leaves me sitting on my thumbs.
- If anyone has already been through the mill with this particular message,
- could you perhaps enlighten me? Is there any workaround that doesn't
- involve waiting for MS to react? Looking at the kernel binary, this
- message is grouped together with several others that seem to describe
- *software* (not hardware) problems in the scheduler, and it may be that
- this message is in fact the broad equivalent of a what a UNIX message about
- spl() getting messed up would be... so I am beginning to suspect that, as
- usual, the support people knew even less than they were pretending to, sigh.
-
- For the record, I'm using a bog-standard 486 clone, Intel CPU, C&T support
- chips, AMI bios etc. I'd be interested to know how the kernel can even
- *tell* it's not running on one of the `officially supported' branded
- machines:-)
