- Greetings:
-
- I am interested in your recommendations from the net of a good
- programmers editor for MS-DOS (386+) class machines. Specifically I
- am interested in either freeware, shareware, or very cheap commercial
- products, so that the cost to me (my University) is relatively low.
- If it costs much I'll have to get a purchase order etc. - you know how
- that goes...
-
- I am not dissatisfied with the editor we I currently use. In
- fact, for shareware I think it's quite nice. But my editor is several
- years old and I'm wondering if there isn't something a little fancier
- available.
-
- Here are some properties of interest.
-
- For me, a candidate editor must:
-
- 1) Be character based.
- 2) Do split screens to edit multiple files
- 3) Have some sort of menu bar for functions which can appear/disappear
- as necessary.
- 4) Have some sort of keybindings I am familiar with (emacs or
- Wordstar)
- 5) Hopefully have a pop-up help screen for keybindings..
-
-
- I would like to know if there is a shareware/freeware editor which has
- two other functions I find very useful:
-
- 1) Support for a mouse so I can select text for cut/paste/delete
- operations.
- 2) Syntax directed indenting so that when I program the editor is
- aware of the current code and automatically indents to handle (), {},
- ;, and other similar constructs. This would be similar to emacs's
- C-mode.
- 3) A relitively robust UNDO facility.
-
-
- The editor DOES NOT need to have:
-
- 1) A fancy macro language.
- 2) The ability to edit huge files.
-
-
- We are a university research lab - the editor would only be used for
- non-commercial purposes.
-
- If you know of an editor that fits this description which I could
- acquire via FTP, or an inexpensive commercial product, please let me
- know. If I get many responses I'll post a nice summary to the net.
-
- Thanks in advance.
