  14. My setup:

  16. I have SLS .98pl1, with the kernel upgraded to .98pl5, all the z*fix.taz
  17. patches up to December 15, and LILO 0.6, with my DOS partition as the default,
  18. though I do most of my work under Linux.  I have 4 primary partions:  1st
  19. one is DOS, next 3 are Linux/Minix, one of which is a swap partiion.
  20. My computer is an AMD 386-40 with a Cyrix 387, 8MB Ram, 128k cache 
  21. (or is it 256?), 234 MB 12ms hard drive, ISA bus, AT disk controller.

  23. My problem:

  25. In my eagerness to get Linux up without having to boot from a floppy, I
  26. installed LILO 0.6 without making sure that the MBR had been backed up
  27. correctly.  (It wasn't!) Now I would like to do a couple of things:  
  28. (i)  change my partitioning setup so I have more of the HD available to Linux,
  29. [which means, I guess, having 1 primary, 1 extended, and several logical 
  30. partions], and 
  31. (ii) be ready to reinstall SLS when 1.00 comes out (therefore, I would like 
  32. to have LILO 0.7 up and running).  But I have LILO 0.6 running the 
  33. entire boot process now, with no backup to the MBR!
  34.  
  35. Questions:
  36.  
  37. 1)  Can LILO run the boot process once I have repartitioned and the disk
  38.     information is inaccessible?  I.e., where does LILO run from?  The MBR
  39.     or the partition?
  40.  
  41. 2)  How can I use MS-DOS 5.0 utilities to make a new Master Boot Record?
  42.     or is BOOTACTV an acceptable alternative?  My documentation of MS-DOS 5.0's
  43.     fdisk is for morons :-) .

  45. I'm planning to put LILO 0.7 on ASAP, anyway, and I have, or will have very
  46. soon, complete backups of my DOS and Linux partitions.

  48. Another question, completely incidental:

  50. 3)  Why does ps, which otherwise works normally, return the name of the
  51.     process with the COMMAND listed as 0-2 characters in parentheses?  E.g.,
  52.     '(ty)'
  53.     which I assume refers to 'getty' or something.  Will this get fixed when
  54.     I reinstall SLS in a couple of weeks?
