- And for those of us who have need for the Image Tools and are running on an
- unsupported machine --- and realize that government money has gone into
- developing this inaccessable software:
-
- Consider writing the NSF and your congressperson. Policy decisions about
- release of work developed at the supercomputer centers needs to be set where
- the bills are paid, not at a local level. Mention the new HPCC Program
- proposed to Congress. Personally, I'm going to contact
- some personal friends within the government and call their attention to the
- source code availablility issue, without pointing to any specific problem with
- SDSC.
-
- The intent and benefit of the Federal High Performance Computing and
- Communications (HPCC) Program "is to accelerate significantly the availability
- and utilization of the next generation of high performance computers and
- networks in a manner consistent with the Strategic and Integrating Priorites
- ..." And " ... HPCC will emphasize the integration of multiple tools developed
- by different organizations for use on multiple hardware platforms." ...
- "Library efforts will lead to a software interchange capability that can
- support exchange of software components among researchers, enabling
- collaborative development of systems through appropriate sharing of software
- assets."
-
- If I review the SDSC posture re: source distribution, it is difficult to see
- just how it meets the goals of the new HPCC Program. SDSC may have good
- reasons for their present posture, but I suggest they seriously consider
- reviewing that posture.
