  33. In my original post I was responding to a comment that First-year English
  34. (FE) was the only required course that students in college must take--all
  35. other core requirements being essentially selectable electives. My own
  36. college experience in the mid 70s was quite different from this as I was
  37. required to take a number of specific courses. And where I teach we require
  38. a number of sprecific courses (including intermediate writing courses) in
  39. which the student has either no choice or the choice is a very narrow range
  40. of courses which each must be equivalent in terms of the total amount of
  41. work and the types of assignments given.
