  15. Communications among humans has begun to radically change since the
  16. introduction of computers into the process. I plan to try to work in
  17. the field of computer communications and networks.
  18.  
  19. I am currently a college sophomore and must declare my major or
  20. concentration by April. Thus, I am trying to design a special
  21. concentration of study to propose to my advisor.  Broadly I would like
  22. to call my concentration "Computers and Society." I would like to
  23. study this field as broadly as possible, incorporating history of
  24. technology, sociology, philosophy, and thinking on future
  25. implications. However, if I must narrow my approach, I might want to
  26. focus on "Computers and Communications."

  28. I am interested in the role computers play in our society.  Recent
  29. technological advances have been advancing society at a faster rate
  30. than ever before possible. I would like to study the computer's place
  31. in society in relation to what advances it has made possible. Also I
  32. would like to study how the technology, that is the computer, can,
  33. has, and will change society.

  35. Currently I am planning to study computers and telecommunications. I
  36. plan to study both the technological foundation, and the social impact
  37. and implications of computers to communication. I need to plan a
  38. program of studies. I need help figuring out what focus to take in my
  39. program of studies, and also suggestions of courses that would form a
  40. solid program in the study of computers and communications. It is
  41. possible to take courses in other divisions of my University, such as
  42. the School of Engineering, if I design my own interdisciplinary major.

  44. Again, I would be interested in hearing from others about what majors
  45. of telecommunications or computers and communications exists in other
  46. schools. Either that or the possible broader major of computers and
  47. society or technology and society would be interesting to hear. Also,
  48. any suggestions of what kinds of courses should be involved in either
  49. majors.
