- FIRST A LITTLE HISTORY FOR THOSE THAT MISSED MY ORIGINAL POSTINGS:
- With a *lot* of effort I finally persuaded Gateway 2000 to sell
- Telepath V.32bis internal fax/modems without requiring the purchase of
- a computer system. The price is only a little over $200 with shipping
- and handling.
-
- I just received the Telepath that I ordered, and this is a preliminary
- evaluation report.
-
- Packaging is nothing to write home about -- the card is wrapped in a
- lot of bubble pack but is left to tumble about inside a large FedEx
- box with the heavy bundle of manuals (also in bubble pack). However,
- it seemed unharmed by the shipping experience.
-
- The modem itself is an 8-bit half-card. There was one patch wire, as
- well as a small daughtercard. (I suspect that these were added to fix
- the well-known problems in the first release of the product.) The
- data pump is Rockwell.
-
- The documentation is good and complete, and the bundled software
- includes Qmodem, Crosstalk for Windows and WinFax, making the package
- an even better value.
-
- I installed the Telepath as COM2 in a Micronics 486DX-25 ISA system
- and ran an extensive series of data communications tests, calling a
- wide variety of modems (including some known problem modems) all over
- the country. Connections were consistent, at the highest possible
- speed, solid and reliable.
-
- I then ran a series of tests comparing file transfer performance
- against a USR Sportster 14400 over a known good local link to a Hayes
- Ultra. The test file was a large (200Kb) compressed (ZIP) file. The
- communications program at my end was Procomm Plus for Windows 1.01; at
- the other end was an Auntie BBS. The file transfer protocol was
- ZMODEM. The results: both upload and download speeds were identical
- for the Telepath and the Sportster.
-
- Overall I am impressed and so far satisfied with the Telepath. Once I
- accumulate more experience I'll post an update here.
-
- Best regards,
- John
