- It wouldn't hurt. If there's a socketed 16450 on your I/O card or
- motherboard, just pop a 16550A in its place. If the UART is soldered and
- you're not skilled at unsoldering DIPs (or don't have the right tools), then I
- wouold not suggest trying to remove an unsocketed chip.

- He may have been right! Many I/O cards these days roll all of the I/O
- functions (including both UARTs) into one chip, meaning that there's no way to
- replace the UART on them. You have options:

- (1) Disable the existing serial port(s) and buy a serial card with 16550A
- chips (or at least sockets so you can install 16550As).

- (2) Toss your I/O card and buy one with socketed UARTs.
