- Usually the fax/voice switching is done upstream of the fax/modem. The
- switching (voice/electronics) is done by a switch that detects the
- presence of fax tones. If they are not present, it rings the phone; if
- they are, it rings the fax.

- A fax/modem is usually a reference to a modem with the ability to send,
- and sometimes receive, faxes. That capability is pretty much standard in
- high-speed modems, and common even in the 2400 bps units.
