  11. I've recently installed a Scout+ on a SPARC and had a problem calling
  12. into it.

  14. Whenever I call into the modem from a remote (another Scout+ in
  15. some cases), I have negoitation/handshake problems.  The 
  16. manifestations of the problem vary, but the most common failure mode 
  17. is that the modem negoitates after carrier detect and seems to decide
  18. on something, then stops sending a carrier signal.  The calling
  19. modem gets confused and the connection is dropped.

  21. Various other modems have attempted to call in and had the same 
  22. problems, even at low baud rates.  I tried substituting a PPI
  23. modem for the Scout+ and found the problems went away.  
  24. I suspect a noisy power source for the SPARC's modem, and
  25. will be trying a relatively good surge protector/EMI/RFI filter
  26. to attempt to fix the problem.
