I'm not sure about other folks, but in my state the Board of Regents has
the opinion that faculty members who make public statements should NOT
be identified as faculty members.  (Especially if that opinion differs
from whatever is currently in political favor.)  Their (unwarrented) fear is
that the general public will perceive an individual faculty member as
speaking for the entire institution, or possibly the State.  (Note: they
don't seem to care if you say something that is politically correct.  In
fact, you may even be rewarded for it.)  Since I'm never sure where the
political winds are blowing, or who in South Dakota might read and take
exception to my words, I include a disclaimer.

That's my reason.
