  14. in the IBM Mainframe forum, a request on what to do
  15. to become "connected" to the Internet.

  17. Your statement doesn't exactly say what you want.  Do
  18. you simply want an internet account, do you want a
  19. direct mail connection into your LAN, or do you want
  20. a domain name?

  22. To get an internet account, there in Michigan you have
  23. some options; you can try one of the service providers
  24. or use one of the national providers such as MCI Mail
  25. and AT&T Mail.  (I have both myself.)
  26.  
  27. If you want to connect your LAN so that you can send
  28. and receive Internet mail, one issue is how much mail
  29. you will generate.  If most of your mail is incoming,
  30. you might just want an EMS account on MCI mail, which
  31. is $100 a year with no charge for incoming traffic.
  32. Outgoing traffic is charged at the standard rate which
  33. is 50c for the first 500 characters of a message, and
  34. 10c for each additional 1K up to 10K, then 5c/K.

  36. If you want a full domain name, you have several
  37. options.  One is to pay a provider of internet service
  38. to connect you.  UUNET Technologies of Falls Church,
  39. Virginia.  The rate from them is $30 a month for the
  40. connection plus $3 per hour of time connected for
  41. sending and receiving messages, and you can use 9600
  42. baud.  This is plus any long-distance connection rate.

  44. If you intend to do HUGE volumes of traffic, you can
  45. try finding a current internet site who will allow
  46. you to hook up to them.  One quote I got from SURA
  47. NET from the U. of Maryland gave a 56KB internet line
  48. with a router and a full internet connection, and the
  49. price was $8,000 a month.  This would give a site
  50. complete connection including FTP either to or from
  51. the site.

  53. MCI will give you a connection in the form of
  54. anything_you_want%company_name@MCIMAIL.COM.  UUNET
  55. or using an internet connector will give you a
  56. domain.  There is also another company - whose
  57. name I can't think of - that's offering a mail only
  58. internet domain for $75 plus $25 a month for unlimited
  59. mail.  (UUNET will also give you access to news groups).
