- Sri Chalasani, with no Internet address listed, stated
- in the IBM Mainframe forum, a request on what to do
- to become "connected" to the Internet.
-
- Your statement doesn't exactly say what you want. Do
- you simply want an internet account, do you want a
- direct mail connection into your LAN, or do you want
- a domain name?
-
- To get an internet account, there in Michigan you have
- some options; you can try one of the service providers
- or use one of the national providers such as MCI Mail
- and AT&T Mail. (I have both myself.)
-
- If you want to connect your LAN so that you can send
- and receive Internet mail, one issue is how much mail
- you will generate. If most of your mail is incoming,
- you might just want an EMS account on MCI mail, which
- is $100 a year with no charge for incoming traffic.
- Outgoing traffic is charged at the standard rate which
- is 50c for the first 500 characters of a message, and
- 10c for each additional 1K up to 10K, then 5c/K.
-
- If you want a full domain name, you have several
- options. One is to pay a provider of internet service
- to connect you. UUNET Technologies of Falls Church,
- Virginia. The rate from them is $30 a month for the
- connection plus $3 per hour of time connected for
- sending and receiving messages, and you can use 9600
- baud. This is plus any long-distance connection rate.
-
- If you intend to do HUGE volumes of traffic, you can
- try finding a current internet site who will allow
- you to hook up to them. One quote I got from SURA
- NET from the U. of Maryland gave a 56KB internet line
- with a router and a full internet connection, and the
- price was $8,000 a month. This would give a site
- complete connection including FTP either to or from
- the site.
-
- MCI will give you a connection in the form of
- anything_you_want%company_name@MCIMAIL.COM. UUNET
- or using an internet connector will give you a
- domain. There is also another company - whose
- name I can't think of - that's offering a mail only
- internet domain for $75 plus $25 a month for unlimited
- mail. (UUNET will also give you access to news groups).
-
- Anyone wanting to discuss this further should send a
- private message to me at
-
- TDARCOS@MCIMAIL.COM or TDARCOS@ATTMAIL.COM
