- Alas, Mr Pournelle seems to think that his endless variations of "redneck
- gun-toting WASPs kick alien / commie butt" _are_ positive and forward
- looking.
-
- I'd hold that a lot of the politics (but not all of it) is going to be
- highly conventional and conservative as it reflects the beliefs of its
- authors and readers. For example, witness the flurry of
- ecological-sensitive and politically correct novels in the past few years.
- Perhaps more than conservative, sf tends to reflect "trendy" opinions. A
- nice example is the appearance of free sex in sf circa late 60's, as
- compared to the coy depictions of only a few years previous. Another
- example is the way that cyberpunk reflects the nihilistic capitalism and
- opportunism of the 80s, in contrast to the humanists of the 70s who
- clearly reflect their flower-power heritage.
-
- Hmmm.

- PS. a quick recommendation - "Quarantine" by Greg Egan - it's got an
- absolute minderf*cker of a plot.
