  21. VIETNAMESE COURT JAILS FOUR FILM-MAKERS

  23.     HANOI, Dec 21, Reuter - A court in Ho Chi Minh city has jailed
  24. four Vietnamese film-makers for working with a Hong Kong company
  25. that produced a film alleged to have contained anti-government
  26. propaganda, a spokesman for the court said on Monday.
  27.     Two of the film-makers, Pham Cong Canh and Pham Kim Thanh were
  28. sentenced to three years imprisonment by the People's Court on
  29. November 25. Nguyen Quoc Minh was sentenced to two years and Huynh
  30. Xay for 16 months.
  31.     They were convicted of "violating the law, irresponsibility
  32. and anti-government propaganda," the spokesman said.
  33.     The Vietnamese army newspaper, Quan Doi Nhan Dan, reported
  34. earlier that Canh, a former head of the state-run Union of
  35. Video-Cinematography Enterprises signed a contract in 1989 with
  36. Hong Kong's Chun Sing Film Co (CSF) to provide services for a film
  37. called "Loving the Song from Vietnam."
  38.     The newspaper said the union "lost its sense of vigilance" and
  39. allowed CSF to use "sophisticated and wicked tricks to violate the
  40. contract, making a film with reactionary content to smear the
  41. Socialist Republic of Vietnam."
  42.     No other details were immediately available.
