- WINTER POSTCARD ACTION FOR BOSNIA
- Proceeds to Red Cross and Red Crescent relief work in Bosnia.
- Hundreds of thousands of people in Bosnia have been brutally
- expelled from their homes and do not know how they will survive
- the winter. The UN and the EC have attempted to deal with the
- problem, and the conflicts causing it, in a variety of ways but
- need the active backing and pressure of public opinion.
- The winter 1992/93 postcard action for Bosnia is being
- launched to reinforce the efforts of the international
- organisations and of the UK government and, at the same time, to
- give practical help to organisations working to help refugees.
- The postcards are being sold in pairs. One is to be sent to
- the UN Peace Conference on former Yugoslavia; the other to the
- [UK] Prime Minister.
- POSTCARD TEXT:
- Dear Mr Cyrus Vance (UN) / Lord Owen (EC) / Rt Hon John Major,
- Millions of refugees in the former Yugoslavia do not know how
- to survive this winter. The international community has to do
- everything it can to save their lives. Two measures must be
- taken immediately:
- 1) All states and especially the richer countries must open
- their borders and allow more refugees to come in;
- 2) Safe havens must be established in Bosnia-Herzegovina,
- in particular in Sarajevo and Tuzla, where refugees can find
- food and shelter.
- I urgently ask you to promote these measures and to secure
- the necessary financial means.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- The safe haven postcard campaign is a pan-European campaign,
- launched by national committees of the Helsinki Citizens'
- Assembly. The HCA is a network of peace, human rights, democracy
- and environment groups throughout East and West Europe, the USA
- and Canada. European Dialogue is a national [UK] committee of the
- HCA and was launched in 1990 by European Nuclear Disarmament
- (END), Charter 88 and Liberty to be a forum for debate and
- activity around issues of peace, democracy, human rights, social
- justice and environmental responsibility.
