  13. The argument between the Heisenberg-uncertainty/Godel-one-
  14. assumption/chaos=anarchy crowd and rational people has been done
  15. here so much as to become boring.  There is no chance of
  16. resolving it any more than there is the bickering between two
  17. religious sects.

  19. The only interesting aspect is to try to figure out why so many
  20. people clutch at any pseudo-science mysticism concocted by
  21. Capra/Penrose ilk.

  23. One explanation is simply that mysticisms have always been
  24. manufactured and embraced, starting with the sun, wind and sea
  25. gods and surviving into the great religions-- and will always be
  26. with us -- and let it go at that.

  28. Another way is say that people naturally grasp at mysticisms,
  29. which are always assigned powers of some sort, in their struggle
  30. to survive and to avoid death.  If you can believe in a
  31. mysticism, you can also dream that it will help you.

  33. To say that the pseudo-science mysticism writers are snake oil
  34. salesmen does not answer the question of why so many people, in
  35. this day and age of education and information availability, buy
  36. the stuff.

  38. As is the case for many questions, there is probably a
  39. combination of answers.  There is probably is an element of the
  40. need for the mother's breast, and for dreams of power to survive,
  41. but I feel that there is also a strong element of anti-science
  42. obsession.  Those who do not think deeply believe that the
  43. development of the atomic bomb caused the worrisome and expensive
  44. cold war, and that the development of pesticides caused all the
  45. ills of the body extant, and that the engineers who developed
  46. motors caused the oil spills.  Anything that suggests that
  47. scientists and engineers are both demonic and stupid has appeal
  48. to the unthinking, of whom there are seemingly more than there
  49. are homeless people on the news.

  51. I wonder why the modern mysticism muddlers have not organized
  52. into some sort of formal religion.  Perhaps they have and I do
  53. not know about it.   Anyone know of such a religion?
