- Actually there are no standards committees or anything like that. It seems
- that the people who are the de-facto namers are (of all people) the ones who
- publish the MAGAZINES, and to a lesser extent the manufacturers. The
- convention here is Letter-Numeral-channel
-
- As in T1/09 Telstar 401 channel 9
- B/12 SBS-6 Channel 12
-
- BUT these rules are not always hard and fast, since some receivers don't have
- all alpha characters. On my DRAKE 1524, C3 is C3, but many receivers don't
- have a C button, or if they do it is used as a C/KU switch, so those
- receivers CALL it F3, which is the old satcom designator for the bird that
- was at that location.
-
- It gets even more bizarre in the case of F4R, which is the old Anik A2. On
- my receiver I call it F4. BUT on those receivers that can not call C4 by its
- proper designation, they use F4 for C4, so to correct this, at least one
- magazine (STVW) is calling F4 F6. Also some receivers call GSTAR 4 R4, but
- mine calls it G4 (G used to mean galaxy, but GALAXY 4 is long gone).
-
- What I suggest to you folks over on the other side of the pond is to just
- decide amongst yourselves what to call what, taking into account the
- receivers you have and their capabilities. YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN STANDARDS
- COMMITTEE. You have the net to communicate. Perhaps someone who has access
- to the various satellites, and who has an alphanumeric receiver can suggest
- ast, since some receivers don't have
- all alpha characters. On my DRAKE 1524, C3 is C3, but many r.
