- Lines: 95
-
- This posting is in place of my more or less regular broadcasts
- of the EUROPEAN SATELLITE LIST, usually called SBC.EXE.
- I have decided to not bother the net anymore with its public
- distribution, because from the noumerous replies I received, I
- learned that you can never make it right for everybody. Even for
- list formats, compression styles etc. individuality exists. This
- by no means is an outburst of frustration. I will only show, how I
- am going to handle this matter in the future rather than just
- uploading it to the HOMESAT list/rec.video.satellite to arrive
- distorted or otherwise useless at close or remote places.
-
- Whenever a new version is out, I will post the following advice
- how to get hold of the list. Depending on the weight of changes,
- this may be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. I wish to point out,
- that this list is available to the net by permission of the
- SATELLITEN BEOBACHTER CLUB (SBC) -Satellite Watcher Club-, based
- in Munich, Germany, with app. 75 members who send in their
- spottings by fax.
-
- The list then is updated and made available from the following public
- sources, free for everyone:
-
- 1. By fax polling. Because of the length of the list, for 3
- parts, 3 different phone numbers have to be dialled:
-
- +49 89 418608 51 for part one ) as from January 1st 1993
- +49 89 418608 52 for part two ) (for 1992 the TWO digits 98 and
- +49 89 418608 53 for part three ) 99 are still in use for 51/52/53
- The numbers and hardware are kindly supplied by the publishers of
- TELESATELLIT magazine.
-
- 2. By downloading from the free TELESATELLIT BBS, 2400 bps 8N1,
- phone number +49 89 418608 95. File name is SBC.EXE, a
- selfextracting ARJ-compressed MS-DOS file. There are several
- other files, all satellite related, but most are in the german
- language. All files combined are also available as ALLES.EXE.
- For those who do not like selfextracting files, each one is also
- available as .ARJ (SBC.ARJ and ALLES.ARJ for instance),
- although the file name list does not show that version.
-
- 3. Through "Channel Videodat", the 24-hour data service on TV
- channel "Pro7" on Astra and Kopernikus 1, using a Videodat
- decoder and programming the SAT ident. The transmission is free
- for all decoder owners.
-
- 4. Through anonymous ftp from the site MCSHH.HANSE.DE
- (192.76.134.1) in the directory pub/satelliten.
- Available is SBC.EXE as well as SBC.TXT, the long, uncompressed
- ASCII file, and SBC.ZIP, along with ALLES.EXE as described
- above.
-
- 5. Through ftp-mail for those who cannot do ftp themselves. I
- have tested one ftp-server myself successfully:
- ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com
- The mail you send to that address should contain the following
- message:
-
- reply yourname@your.site (place your Internet address here)
- connect mcshh.hanse.de
- binary
- chdir pub/satelliten
- uuencode
- get sbc.exe
- quit
-
- You soon will receive a confirmation for your request, and how many
- other requests there are before yours, and some hours later you
- will find the uuencoded file in your mail.
-
- 6. You still can always write to me (wrs@mcshh.hanse.de) and
- request the file. Please indicate the format you need, otherwise
- I will send the SBC.EXE selfextracting file for MS-DOS
- uuencoded. Note, that the one question you will be asked when
- running SBC.EXE to selfextract, is whether you want the
- extraction to take place now. The answer is JA rather than YES.
- That's all German you need.
-
- The list SBC.TXT is written in 8-bit ASCII and in the strange
- format of 200 characters per line. Reason for that is the main
- purpose for distribution "Fax Polling". I am using SIDEWAYS to
- print it properly on a matrix printer. You might find better
- ways. Available by ftp is also the program satinfo.exe, which is
- a database program for the list SBC.TXT, but it might require a
- little more knowledge of the german language.
-
- OK, having said all that, a December 28th version is now ready
- for the asking...
-
