- South Scanner Satellite Services Chart
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Volume 2 - Issue # 1 (C)Copyright 1991,1992 Dec. 27, 1992
- ==============================================================
-
- The South Scanner Satellite Services Chart is (C)Copyrighted
- 1991, 1992 by Robert Smathers, Albuquerque, New Mexico USA.
- Based on an idea by Gary Bourgois, it has been designed to keep
- the home dish owner up to date with the many changes in the
- satellite television hobby.
-
- Many hours of personal observations and contributor reports have
- been compiled into this chart. Errors are bound to happen,
- especially since services can change quickly. Care has been
- taken to check the accuracy of the information. The publisher,
- Robert Smathers, is not responsible for any errors. Corrections,
- new additions, or comments should be mailed to one of the
- following electronic mail addresses:

- when using an Albuquerque BBS
-
-
- If a piece of information is used in the chart, credit
- will be given in the special thanks section.
-
- This chart may be freely distributed following my "no
- nonsense" distribution rules:
-
- - The chart is distributed in WHOLE
- - The chart is not changed in copy or content
- - no deletions or additions or format re-arrangement
- - Permission MUST be obtained if you want to use any part
- of this chart in any project. I usually will grant permission
- if I find it in the best interest of the readers and
- contributors to do so.
-
- The chart may be echoed or relayed as long as the contents of
- the chart have not been changed and the credits and special
- thanks sections are intact.
-
-
- The latest issue of the South Scanner Satellite Services Chart
- can always be found on the Albuquerque BBSes mentioned above
- (download the file SSV2N1.ZIP) , by Internet FTP to
- SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL or its mirrors in the pd1:<msdos.info>
- directory, or by the Rec.Video.Satellite newsgroup on the
- Usenet/HOMESAT. The latest ZIPped and UUENCODED South Scanner
- Satellite Services Chart can be obtained by Email. If you Email
- me, I will send you a copy. I also have a UNZIP utility for UNIX
- that will unzip my chart if you should need one. Another way of
- obtaining the chart is by Emailing a mail server. Send a message
- to mail-server@ijpc.uucp with "get ssv2n1.zip" in the message.
- The mail server will send you a UUENCODED, ZIPped copy of the
- South Scanner Satellite Services Chart. This chart can also be
- obtained in a unique way. Gary Bourgois has a SDTS (Satellite
- Data Text Service) on the Let's Talk Radio network on late
- Friday/early Saturday morning. The SDTS is a one way modem
- transmission at 300 baud. I would like to thank Gary and the
- Let's Talk Radio Network (Frank Collins, et al) for putting the
- chart on the SDTS service.
-
- ---------------
-
- Welcome to the South Scanner Satellite Services Chart volume 2
- issue 1! The first anniversary of the chart was November 27.
-
- Jay Novello in North Carolina has continued to keep the Atlantic
- satellites section updated. He has updated the listings for the
- Intelsats, TDRS, and PanAmSat. Because some trees lost their
- leaves, he has been able to add the Statsionar, Hispasat, and
- Telecom II satellites that can be seen from North America.
- He also was able to give me the latest listing of SCPC on Galaxy
- 2/3 as well as a thorough update of Galaxy 2, Spacenet 2, and
- Satcom F2R.
-
- There were a lot of additions to this chart. I went through and
- added ATIS frequencies as well as added some of the data
- transmission frequencies. Satcom C3 and Satcom C4 were updated
- (they've blossomed with activity since the last South Scanner
- Chart came out). I also took out the note section due to the
- chart being long enough. If you want the type of news that was
- in the note section, please listen to TVRO talk shows or read
- TVRO newsgroups on computer networks.
-
- Philip Dolve in Los Angeles asked for and received permission to
- make the electronic South Scanner chart a printout with tables. I
- granted him permission because I felt he was doing a beneficial
- thing by printing out this chart on paper (especially for some of
- the readers who do not have access to a computer). This was the
- first special project for this chart. Listen to Gary's show,
- Friday Night Live, Friday evenings at 9pm ET on Spacenet 3R/21 at
- 5.80 MHz to find out if Philip will make the SSV2N1 chart
- available in printout form for just the cost of postage and the 8
- 1/2 by 11 inch envelope he uses. I would like to thank Philip
- for this service.
-
- The second special project is putting this chart on audio tape
- for the benefit of our sight-impaired friends. I have no problem
- getting it on tape -- what I am working on now is how to
- distribute the tape to those who want it. If you have any ideas
- on distribution, let me know. Once I figure out everything, I'll
- actually record it on tape and get the distribution going.
-
- Since I am too far west (and also have trees in the way), I
- cannot receive the Atlantic Intelsats, TDRS, and PanAmSat. I am
- leaving it up to the east coast readers to keep that section
- current. If you can receive those satellites and see changes in
- the services, please let me know and I will update that section
- with the information I receive. If you have a frequency listing
- for the Intelsats (most of them don't have one in this chart)
- please let me know so I can get it into the chart.
-
- When Intelsats and other such satellites start transmitting to North
- America from over the Pacific, I will include those in this chart. I
- have a clean shot to the west, so I should have no problem with
- observing those.
-
- If you have any more features you want to see in this chart
- please write me a note and I'll consider it.
-
- Trees at my dish site do not allow for the viewing of signals
- from Galaxy 2, Spacenet 2, and Satcom F2.
-
- Also, I am too far south to receive the Canadian KU-band birds.
- I would appreciate someone charting those satellites for addition
- to future charts. This chart features a partial list of services
- on all of the above mentioned satellites.
-
- Legend
- ------
-
- The format:
-
- SAT-TR CODE AUDIO DESCRIPTION AND/OR NOTES
-
- SAT-TR: The satellite and transponder of the service
-
- CODE: A descriptive code for the service
-
- The codes used in this chart:
-
- SCPC - Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) service
- FM2 - FM Squared Audio Service
- ITC - In the Clear.
- VC2 - VideoCipher 2.
- VC1 - VideoCipher 1B.
- V2+ - VideoCipher 2 Plus.
- OAK - Oak Orion.
- LTCH - Leitch.
- ASC - Audio Sub-carrier.
- BMC - BMAC.
- PAL - PAL format signal.
- DAT - Digital Audio system
- D2MC - D2MAC transmission system
- SECAM - SECAM format signal.
-
- AUDIO: The audio channels used for a service
-
- DESCRIPTION/NOTES: Description of the service and/or notes where
- needed.
-
- ----------
-
- o/v: Occasional Video -- Various types of occasional feeds; if a
- primary user is found, I'll change "o/v" to the primary user's
- name. In this chart, primary users can be mentioned as using an
- transponder on an occasional basis. Those will be marked by the
- primary user followed by the "o/v" notation. There will be no
- codes and audio channels for occasional video services without a
- primary user.
-
- o/a: Occasional Audio -- Audio is heard on an occasional
- basis or audio may be present on an occasional basis
-
- (none) I use this to describe a transponder that I have never
- observed video on or a service left (listed in a previous
- South Scanner Satellite Services Chart) and I have not seen
- any video since.
-
- UA: Not Available -- This signal is scrambled with a
- scrambling system that is unavailable to the home dish owner
- in the United States.
-
- VC-II: The video or the channel is scrambled with the General
- Instruments (R) Videocipher II system. Most of these VC-
- II scrambled channels are available to the home dish owner
- in the United States via subscription.
-
- VC-II Plus: The video or the channel is scrambled with the
- General Instruments (R) Videocipher II Plus System.
- Most of these VC-II Plus scrambled channels are
- available to the home dish owner in the United
- States via subscription.
-
- Oak Orion: The video or the channel is scrambled with the Oak
- Communications (R) [now known as TV Communications
- International] Orion system. The Oak [TV
- Communications International] Orion scrambled channels
- on the Canadian TV satellites are not available to
- the American home dish owner. Most of the Oak Orion
- scrambled channels are available to Canadian dish
- owners via subscription.
-
- BMAC: The video or the channel is scrambled with the Scientific
- Atlanta (R) BMAC system. Most of the BMAC channels are
- not available to the home dish owner.
-
- LEITCH: The video or the channel is scrambled with the LEITCH (R)
- system. The LEITCH scrambled channels are not available
- to the home dish owner.
-
- VC-IB: The video or the channel is scrambled with the General
- Instruments (R) Videocipher 1B system. These channels are
- not available to the home dish owner.
-
- FM2: The audio is delivered via a method known as FM Squared.
- A simple explanation: FM Squared signals require a video
- carrier to exist. FM Squared signals are similar to audio
- subcarriers as we know it except for the fact that they are
- located below the 5.00 MHz audio subcarrier frequency that a
- normal satellite receiver can tune to.
-
- SCPC: The audio is delivered by a Single Channel Per Carrier
- (SCPC) transmission. A SCPC transmitted signal is
- transmitted with its own carrier, thus eliminating the need for a
- video carrier to be present to exist. Dozens of SCPC
- signals can be transmitted on a single transponder.
-
- ITC: The service is "In the Clear" or not scrambled.
-
- ASC: Audio Sub-Carrier. The audio service is delivered by an audio
- sub-carrier. An audio sub-carrier requires the presence of a
- video carrier to exist. If you take away the video carrier, the
- audio sub-carrier disappears as well.
-
- PAL: The service is transmitted in the PAL format, rather than NTSC.
-
- DAT: The service is a digital audio transmission. There is currently
- no way for a home dish owner to receive a DAT service.
-
- D2MC: The service is transmitted in D2MAC. The D2MAC signal may or
- may not be encrypted.
-
- SECAM: The service is transmitted in the SECAM format, rather
- than NTSC.
-
- ATIS: Acronym for Automatic Transponder Identification System --
- the morse code that contains the Uplinker Name, Uplinker
- Telephone Number, and the Uplinker License Number.
-
- -----------
-
- - On the satellite uplink/downlink frequency chart, the
- polarization of the transponder can be found in parenthesis in
- the transponder column.
-
- - If only the video is encrypted, the code column will have the
- encryption system used with the video, and the audio channel
- column will have the program audio channels.
-
- - If both audio and video are encrypted, the code column will
- have the encryption system used, and no audio channels will be
- listed.
-
- - All channel numbers for C-band satellites are indicated with
- their dial position on a 24 channel analog dial. All channel
- numbers for Ku-band satellites are indicated with the actual
- satellite manufacturer transponder number. Please consult the
- frequency list in the header of each Ku-band satellite for a
- downlink frequency for a particular transponder.
-
- - For the FM Squared and SCPC Signals -- I am using a TV band
- radio for reception of those signals. I have listed the services
- so that the services located towards the top of the list are
- towards the left of my TV band radio dial and the services
- towards the bottom of the list are towards the right of my TV
- band radio dial. Also, many of the SCPC signals found in this
- chart appear on an occasional audio basis, so you may not find
- a desired channel when you go searching for it.
-
- - A "|" character next to an SCPC or FM Squared listing indicates
- that two services are sharing the same SCPC or FM Squared
- frequency (at least it appears that way on my TV Band radio)
-
- - A "/" character will be used to denote stereo pairs on the
- program audio listings. On the left side of the slash will be
- the frequency for the left channel. On the right side of the
- slash will be the frequency for the right channel.
-
- - Observations for the Intelsat/Panamsat Atlantic satellites were made
- with no special equipment to receive circularly polarized feeds or
- exotic downlink frequencies. There is no way to see services spot
- beamed to South America or Europe.
