- It's not just a rumor anymore: CNN comes to Germany. They join the
- lately founded channel 'n-tv' [D and will put it on Astra 1B "within the
- next few days". Maybe on transponder 32, where we do see color bars
- for several months already? Maybe Bernard Shaw has to learn German now?

- Is this CNN different than CNN International ? I was recently in
- Hamburg and stayed at the Marriott on ABC Strasse and the hotel
- had CNN International. I asked at the front desk for information
- about their television service but no one knew if they had cable
- or satellite. The picture quality was good. I would have loved to
- have seen a European TVRO system. Maybe next time !!

- Jim:
- Yes, this is a completely different system. Maybe they even keep the
- name n-tv rather than "CNN Germany". Most of all, it is in german
- language, and the one you saw at the Marriott is CNN International
- in English (available also partly on Spanish on a special audio track) [A [A
- [B [B
- CNN International will certainly remain as it is. We do have access at
- three different methods in Hamburg:
- 1. Ku band Intelsat 27.5 deg west
- 2. Ku band Astra 19 deg. east (double hop from above)
- 3. By cable, now fed from Astra with occasional local commercials
- in German (like Berlitz Language School).
- N-TV from Berlin is on Kopernikus Satellite, 12 GHz range and on most
- cable systems. It will probably only benefit largly from the newsfeeds
- which CNN gets, and then be translated. We'll see.

- 32 is showing a circular colour bar logo (needs to be seen to be believed)
- with the name "DOCUMANIA" in the lower part of the screen. On 30 is its
- companion station "CINEMANIA" imposed on a test card which recreates itself
- every 10 seconds. Both services have a count 1-10 in 4 circles distributed
- near the corners. Accompanying sound is a sort of rock muzak. This started
- this weekend. These are listed on the Info screen (transp. 29) as run
- by a Spanish company, service begins 1 Jan 1993. Isn't n-tv rumoured
- for the 1C, launch April 1993.

- That was indeed so, until last week CNN announced that they are holding
- a reservation for a transponder on 1B still for their German output.
- That would be n-tv now, so they said it will "show up on ASTRA in only
- a few days". That certainly could not be 1C. Well, we'll see. Certainly
- the SES would not keep the transponderlist forever on one channel, if they
- could rent it...

- 32 certainly not - it's now reserved by a Spanish TV company, together
- with transponder 30: One is called CINEMANIA and obviously should bring movies
- in Spanish language, the other is DOCUMANIA and could send reports on nature,
- science, economics, etc.
- The only free tp on 1B now is 29, - currently used for the ASTRA info which
- may disappear.
-
- More rumors: Lifestyle (tp 5, ASTRA 1A) negotiates with RTL-2, the new German
- general entertainment channel about selling them their transponder. RTL-2 got
- its licence to broadcast and they'll be starting mid-January 1993.
-
- When ASTRA 1C will be powered in June/July 1993, two more Spanish channels
- will appear. Also, DISCOVERY and BRAVO are said to move from Intelsat to
- ASTRA 1C then.
-
- SAT.1 probably goes back to Eutelsat - if they give up their tp on ASTRA or if
- they broadcast from both birds is not confirmed yet.

- Well, as I guessed only two days ago, n-tv, the german CNN affiliate,
- IS NOW BROADCASTING FROM ASTRA 1B, transponder 29. This happens to be
- the horizontal neighbour of CNN International on transponder 28.
-
- Strange is, they do not use the main wideband audio carrier 6.50 MHz,
- as everybody else does, but only 7.02 and 7.20 stereo/Wegener Panda
- narrow subcarriers.
-
- We lost the Astra Information Display, but it would happen one day
- anyway...
