- I found the new letterboxed laserdisc of DELIVERANCE under the
- tree last Friday (a real Christmas-type movie, no?), and last night I
- finally had the chance to watch it. The movie is, of course, an
- unqualified classic and one of the masterpieces of the 1970s, as well
- as one of John Boorman's best films, and that alone would justify the
- very affordable $35 price for the laserdisc.
- Here's some more good news: the new Warner Bros. laserdisc press
- is FINALLY working the bugs out of its system, and we're starting to
- see some high-quality laserdiscs. Just last week I bought the
- letterboxed disc of TOM JONES, which was pressed at the WB plant
- earlier this year - it had a WB inner sleeve and everything), and I
- was sorely disappointed with the quality of the disc; this made me
- nervous when I put DELIVERANCE into my disc player for the first time.
- But this time, the folks at Warner Bros. Home Video have finally
- done the right thing and given us a laserdisc worthy of the movie.
- The picture is generally sharp and clear. There are a few grainy
- spots, along with a couple of spots on the disc where the "wavy line
- effect" appears on such objects as a screen door and one of the canoes
- heading downriver; but these faults are rare and can be easily
- overlooked. The credits are crystal-clear, unlike the credits on the
- EXCALIBUR disc - which costs $5 more than this one.
- The sound quality is excellent: it sounds as though the film was
- digitally re-mastered, though there's nothing on the disc cover that
- actually says this. Surround-sound is used to good effect, and the
- famous "duelling banjos" scene sounds as though you're listening to
- the instruments being played right there in your own room.
- The disc is fully letterboxed in 2.35:1 Panavision, and the
- theatrical trailer is included at the end of the movie, too (a Warner
- Bros. first, I believe) - also fully letterboxed. The entire disc is
- in CLV, with no CAV "bonuses," but it does include chapter stops.
- On the whole, the new DELIVERANCE is a laserdisc worth
- purchasing. It marks a step in the right direction for Warner Bros.
- Video. While I won't sing excess praise for their new laserdisc plant
- (they still have a long way to go before they come out with a disc
- that compete with APOCALYPSE NOW, quality-wise), this is the best
- disc I've seen from them in some time.
