  21. I find this an interesting concept.  I have NEVER heard of such a thing....a
  22. gate that operates off horn sounds.  Not to call anyone a liar, but can you
  23. verify 100% that the whistle is what activates the gates?  I just find it
  24. strange that a noise would work the gates.  What would happen if a semi
  25. pulled up to the crossing and blew his horn?

  27. Perhaps (again, I say perhaps, because maybe I am completely wrong here) you
  28. are being fooled by a GCP.  A GCP is a Grade Crossing Predictor.  These are
  29. fancy gates that instead of having the usual activation block in the rails,
  30. actually detect MOVEMENT on the rails.  Thus, if you are going 10 miles per
  31. hour, the gates will go down when you are X amount of feet away from the
  32. crossing.  If you are doing 50, they will go down at Y feet from the
  33. crossing.  If you are stopped, they go up.  As soon as you start moving
  34. again, they go down.

  36. Rule books state that two long on the whistle must be sounded before
  37. movement, so perhaps you are being fooled by the hoghead whistling off, then
  38. starting to move, and right at that second the gates go down (because the GCP
  39. detects movement).

  41. As I said, I could be 100% wrong here, but I can guarantee that in all the
  42. areas of BC and Canada that I have worked, I have never encountered a
  43. crossing acticvated by a whistle.
