- Ernest,

- The Canadian government decided that international broadcasting was
- a luxury it couldn't afford, while sending troops to Saudia Arabia in order
- to prove that if Britain, France, and the US could it could, that stupid
- display of me-tooism wasn't considered a luxury.
-
- Of course, they haven't given up their frequencies either. I
- personally believe that if they don't want to use them they should rent out
- their transmitters to such stations as All India Radio and Radio Pakistan,
- who don't get heard here too well. Of course, I see from the Sackville
- relay schedule that they do carry Korean broadcasting (it doesn't say if
- it is in English), but it is at 0500 UTC when I listen to Kol Israel and then
- to the other 45 minutes of Newshour. When Israel is on summer time I listen
- to Newshour the whole hour. Anyway, I just can't listen to a Korean station
- instead of Newshour but if the Canadians don't want to use the frequencies
- and transmitter sites they should give them to somebody who does. Mind you,
- I do like to listen to As It Happens and the Royal Canadian Air Farce.

- PS--actually, there are a number of countries, such as the Philipines, that
- have no major shortwave voices at all, unless you count stations that relay
- major foreign broadcasters or are copntrolled by foreign religious interests.
