- There are many types of Lithium batteries, the most common one is MnO2
- (Mangan dioxide). This has a very linear discharge characterisitic all the
- way from 3V down down to about 1V per cell. Other types such as Li-SO2 or
- (CV)x have a flat characteristic and a sharp drop at the end. As far as I
- know, all 2CR5 packages are 1300 mAh Li-MnO2. so if a camera claims
- battery is out at about 5V, it means that most of the capacity is still
- left. So I now want to ask you: Do you have any experience of using the
- battery all the way to the bitter end? (i.e until the camera no longer
- works).
-
- The reason I ask is that my newly bought EOS 5 claims battery is empty
- after only one roll!! although I admit that I played a lot before even
- loading any film, and I played a lot during the roll, but not much flash.
- After having replaced with a new one, I measured the old: resting unloaded
- voltage is 5.6V, loading with 650 mA dropped voltage to about 4 volts for
- about 5-10 seconds, "short-circuit" with an Amp-meter gave about 3A after
- which it fairly quickly recovered to about 5.2 V unloaded. So the battery
- was far from being empty. Moreover, the new battery showed half full
- battery just after a few pictures were taken, but soon recovered to show
- full battery!
-
- I called Canon, and they said that the EOS 5 is set higher than other EOS
- concering battery alarm, and he did not understand why it was set so high.
- He said factory setting is: half battery symbol warning at 5.4V, empty
- symbol at 5.0 V, blinking symbol at 4.6 volts, and he said that the camera
- stops working at about 4 volts, but as long as it works, exposures should
- be correct. He claimed that they can make adjustment for free in the
- camera if I have warranty left. Suggested adjustment is about a half volt
- down.

- PS: Several companies are working on new improved Li cells and accumulators,
- but I have no info on what kind of discharge characteristic they are
- expected to have.
