- With complicated AF systems, it is hard ot be 100% sure when buying
- used stuff. If there is a problem, it is not as easy to service it
- at local centers.
-
- I first recommed a complete check of all functions as described in the
- users manual. I also recommed shooting a test roll, with some flash
- pictures, on slide film. Reason is that slide film if properly developed
- gives an accurate indication of how the exposure is being metered.
- (Printing from negatives always involves adjustments and can mislead
- you about camera performance.) ONe way to check flash sync is to fire
- the camera/flash with back open - you should be able to see the flash
- illumination at up to the rated sync speed.
-
- The resulting test pictures should have good sharpness. The viewfinder
- image can be misleading; it may appear focussed in the finder, but be
- out on the print or slide. Such would indicate problems with the focus
- system or physical distortion of the camera body.
-
- I also recommend at thorough check in you local shops. I personally
- do not have a high opinion of the photo/camera fairs. Often their good
- deals are actually higher than local shops. After the show is over,
- you have no recourse if there is a problem with the equipment. If you
- buy used equipment from an established local store, you have a place
- to go if the stuff turns out to be bad.
-
- I have found the camera fairs to be an interesting way to spend a morning.
- They are also great sources for hard-to-find accessories and discontinued
- items. If you were searching for a Nikon F1 (old, reliable manual body)
- and the earlier series of lenses, then the fair would be a good source.
