  21.     This is an interesting point, Chris. I can't remember the exact numbers,
  22. but I do recall that the Golden Retriever Club of America calculated that
  23. only a small percentage (let say 5-10%, but this is just my guess) of the
  24. golden retrievers registered with AKC were bred by GRCA members. Almost everyone
  25. that I can think of (although I'm sure that there are many exceptions) who
  26. shows goldens in conformation is a GRCA member. This suggests that only a small
  27. portion of the registered golden retrievers were bred by "show people".
  28.     I do know that in our local golden retriever club (which is made up
  29. of show people, field people, obedience people, and people with one golden who
  30. primarily serves as the family pet), only a limited number of litters are
  31. produced by club members every year (much less than 1/month). In contrast,
  32. there are often 10 litters advertised each week in the local Sunday paper.
  33.     My suspicion is that the people who have the most influence on "popular"
  34. breeds like goldens as far as sheer numbers of puppies registered are the
  35. so called "backyard" breeders.
