- We had the same situation, two cats that didn't get on at all. We made the
- mistake of introducing a new (male) when the first one was 3 - we thought
- they would be company for each other, not realizing that the temperament
- of the older cat was not compatible. We all (4 adults) made conscious
- efforts to shsow the two cats the same love and affection - we did indeed
- love them both equally, but when the younger one reach about 2 he started
- spraying in the house. Nothing was safe from his "marker" - he ruined a
- VCR, CDs, you name it! We sometimes wondered how he reached the things
- he sprayed! The smell was unbelievable and the vet said there was no
- cure - he would spray in another home just as much, even with no other
- animals and we couldn't bear the idea of putting him down. A solution
- presented itself in the nick of time - a friend's farm. We took him
- up there last June and he has settled in very well. There are other cats
- there and he seems to get on with them. He's become a barn cat and
- can spray all he wants.
-
- The funny thing was Bogie's reaction to being alone - he went all over
- the house looking for Tuffy. He went off his food and only came in
- the house to look for his ex-mate. It was nearly a month before he
- was back to normal and now he really revels in being the only cat.
- In fact he's gone from being quite standoffish to being very (for him)
- affectionate and sleeps on our bed at night in the cold weather.
-
- Sorry I've rambled on a bit, but we were so pleased to find a solution
- and not have to put Tuffy down. I'm just sorry that we're probably
- sentenced to being a one-cat family for the next 10 years.
