- I have had three cats and a dog for several years now. My oldest cat is a
- spayed female tortise-shell who is going on 12 (amazing how time flys).
- The "girls" are a pair of grey cats, sisters from the same litter, who are now
- 3 years old. The dog is also female, now 5-1/2 yrs old.
-
- Aside from the usual joys of lots of free ankle-washes, sleeping with purring
- furballs, etc., it has been a continuous sideshow to watch the four animals
- interact with each other. Kimi, my oldest cat, was very standoff-ish from the
- girls (Smokey and Skitter) for the first year or so I had them. The girls would
- play together as kittens do, racing each other around the house, while Kimi
- looked on with what seemed to be an attitude of 'grown-up tolerance for the
- youth of today'. But for about the past year, things have changed slightly.
- Kimi will now play chase-around-the-house with Skitter, but she mostly
- ignores Smokey. Smokey and Skitter now seem to spend as much time in
- spats as they do in playing.
-
- When the dog was introduced, Kimi and her son Winnie (since succumbed to
- Feline "Aids" :-( ) were agast and spent most of their time trying to stay
- out of the way of the hyperactive (terrier mix) puppy-dog-from-hell (the
- cat's opinion) who thought it would be great fun to play with the cats.
- Kimi has gradually accepted the dog, but still does not allow her to become
- too familiar and on more than one occasion has enforced her personal space
- with claws to the nose, fortunately with no serious injuries.
-
- When Smokey and Skitter arrived shortly after Winnie's death, Gypsy the dog
- 'adopted' them and has mothered them ever since. She (the dog) still gets very
- upset and comes to get us if she sees that it is raining or she hears a catfight
- outside and she can't find 'her' girls. The girls, in response, still sleep with
- her and come running to her if something frightens them or if she barks in
- a certain way. Sometimes when I wake up in the mornings I find my bed
- bulging with humans, cats, and a dog. It gets a little crowded, but it sure is
- warm.
