- I am a foster mother for a parakeet who's been rather abused
- in recent months. I may get to keep him (hope hope) if things
- don't work out for his real owner. Anyway, he has a 4 word
- vocabulary and is getting used to people, free flight etc.
- and is really perking up. He was kept in a closet most of the
- time, in his previous residence because he "was too noisy" and
- there was often a cat in the apt. also.
- We are careful when we let him out for flight, closing drapes and
- removing all hazards. However,
- I have a lot of houseplants and the bird seems interested in them.
- One of my books says you can even put a live climbing tree into
- the cage, if there is room... well, there is but *what* sort of
- plants are safe to use?
- I know dieffenbachias are poisonous (I don't have any). What other
- plants are verboten to birds?
- He eats lettuce, broccoli, and alfalfa sprouts in small amounts.
- I'd like to move his cage in amongst my "jungle" -- it would look
- good there -- but some leaves/stems might be within munching
- distance and don't want to make him sick.
-
- Is there an FAQ for parakeets?
-
- One more item: he seems very libidinally attached to one of his
- plastic penguins. He's obsessive and will do NOTHING but
- coo at, peck, and regurgitate on this little penguin whenever it's
- in the cage. He will follow me anywhere if I'm holding it.
- I am trying to wean him away from this toy little by little.
- His extreme mania for this toy seemed, well, "unhealthy"...
- especially since we are talking about 8 hours of nonstop fixation
- at a time.
- I don't want to deny him the comfort of this familiar object but
- DO want him to interact with me more.
- Am I on the right track?
- I would like some suggestions and experience stories.
