- There was a very interesting discussion about this in a local San Francisco
- area magazine recently - I can't remember if it was the Bay Guardian or the
- SF Chronicle's "Pink Pages" in the Sunday paper. The conclusions were,
- as I recall:
- 1. Hollywood is still strongly sexist and the positions of power are male-
- dominated. Given that nakedness is treated as a metaphor for vulnerabil-
- ity and subservience, it's understandable that women would be naked and
- men would be clothed.
- 2. There is a sense in Hollywood that showing naked women excites the
- audience and therefore sells tickets or gets people to watch programs,
- while showing naked men either bores or offends the audience.
-
- Now that we're off recreational nudity, I'll get back on topic... I've
- been pleased to see a few movies in the last couple of years which have
- managed to convey a high degree of eroticism without using much or any
- nudity; I'm thinking particularly of "Dead Again" and "Ghost". Which
- goes to show that not only does nudity not automatically result in sex,
- but sex (as in eroticism) doesn't even require nudity!
