- notwithstanding jeff's wonderful efforts to recently (i.e. a mere few moments
- ago) type in the directions to nye, complete with a map, i offer this humble
- piece of advice: DON'T DRIVE! take the T instead
-
- new year's in boston means the annual "First Night" celebration, which means
- that you won't be the only one trying to get into the city (there will be an
- estimated half-million others); so my advice (and this is also the advice given
- in the "First Night" insert in the Boston Phoenix) is to drive to the outskirts
- of the city and take the T from there; unless you are one of the lucky few to
- end up with the limited parking near the arena (and that won't do you any good
- if you're spending the night), it will be much more of a hassle, and probably
- cost you a lot more money, if you take your car (oh yeah, for those of you
- staying at the Y, the price does NOT include parking of any sort)
-
- Matthew's arena is located on the E spur of the Green Line; unfortunately,
- there's not a parking lot at the end of that line; according to the Phoenix,
- there are lots at the following stations: Alewife (Red Line, on the northern
- side of Cambridge), Braintree (Red Line, on the South Shore), Wonderland
- (Blue Line, in Revere), and Riverside (D section of the Green Line, in Newton);
- i will provide directions to the Riverside stop, because it's the only one
- that I know where it is; if you want any other information about the T, call
- the MBTA customer-service line at 617-722-3200
-
- Newton is located immediately west of Boston; if you're coming from the West,
- right before you hit the tolls on the Mass Pike (I-90), veer right at exit 15
- and get on 128 (I-95) South; if you're not coming from the West, then perhaps
- you should drive to another T stop, although 128 (I-95) loops around the city,
- so there are many other points that you could get on it (like at I-93, both
- north and south of the city); anyway, once you're on 128 South, you only have
- to stay on it for a very short time (less than a mile); get off at the stop
- that's marked with a T sign (it's the Riverside stop, to reiterate, but I don't
- know if that's on the sign); it appears to be exit 22 from my map, but I'd
- trust the T marker more than I'd trust an exit number; if you hit Rte. 16,
- you've gone too far
-
- i called the MBTA this afternoon, and they said that parking at Riverside is
- $2.25 for 24 hours; you're NOT going to find cheaper parking than that anywhere
- in the city; in most places, it only costs 85 cents to take the T; from the end
- of the D section of the Green Line, however, it's $2.00; there might be a token
- machine or a change machine at Riverside, but don't count on it; i've never
- taken the T from Riverside, but the other spots on the D section of the Green
- Line that I've been at have neither a token machine nor a change machine, and
- the T requires EXACT CHANGE, NO BILLS ACCEPTED! so be sure you have some
- quarters just in case; if you're planning on getting into town a bit before the
- show and plan on taking the T around the city for a bit, I suggest you buy some
- extra T tokens if you can; you won't save any money, but as it gets later in
- the day you'll save yourself the time of waiting in line
-
- anyway, once you're on the T, remember that you want either the Symphony stop
- on the E section of the Green Line, or the Mass Ave stop on the Orange Line;
- from Riverside, take the T INBOUND until Copley, and then get on an E train
- (be sure it says "E") and go OUTBOUND for 2 stops, until Symphony; from any
- other starting point, just look at a T map; they're in all the stations and
- all the cars
-
- once you get off the T, follow the map jeff posted; you're pretty close by
-
- The last trains leave downtown at 2:30 AM on new year's, and service is free
- after 10 PM. And if you want to find a cab after the show, to quote the
- Phoenix, "early in 1993 it may be futile, but later in the morning you'll
- probably be able to reach Andrew Cab (268-4548), Boston Cab (536-5010),
- Checker Taxi (536-7000), Independent Taxi Operations (426-8700), Red Cab
- (734-5000), or Town Taxi (536-5000)."
-
- If you have the time, I advise that you get into Boston a bit early and enjoy
- some of the First Night activities. There's plenty of stuff going on
- throughout the day, starting at 1 PM. Outdoor events are free (I think), and a
- $10 First Night button gets you admission to all indoor events. Indoor events
- are on a first-come/first-seated basis. Thru Dec. 30, buttons are available at
- stores throughout the area. On Dec. 31, buttons are available from 10 AM to 11
- PM at the Button and Information Trolleys located at Copley Square, Park
- Street, Boylston Street (near Arlington), MacArthur Mall on Boston Common, and
- City Hall Plaza, and from 1 to 11 PM at the Hynes Convention Center. You can
- also get them thru TicketBastards (with an additional "service charge"), but I
- won't bother with that info.
-
- There's an insert about First Night with a schedule, map, etc. in this week's
- Boston Phoenix (the local "happenings" paper), and I'm sure they'll be
- something in the Dec. 31 Boston Globe, if you're interested.
-
- One final word of warning - remember that public consumption of alcohol is
- illegal, and it would sure be a bummer to spend new year's eve in jail
- (although maybe we could get Phish to dedicate "Paul and Silas" to you).
-
- Well, that's about all the relevant info I can think of. I hope somebody
- actually makes use of this information, of which chance may be slim,
- considering that quite a few people are either off of the net now, or already
- on tour.
-
- It looks like a pre-show gathering just isn't going to happen. I had offered
- the idea of the Y, but I'll probably be hanging out at some First Night event
- instead. Our crowd at the Y seems to be somewhere between 15 and 25 people,
- but I'm not totally sure. I guess some other people could come back and hang
- out and party with us for a while after the show. After all, that was the
- original idea. I hope to be wearing a brand, spankin' new, 1993 PhishNet
- shirt, assuming I get mine from Matt in Springfield. After both shows in
- Portchester, we kind of ended up with a spontaneous net gathering (larger in
- size than most planned gatherings I've been to) right in front of the stage on
- Fishman's side. So, how about we make that a tentative meeting spot for
- anybody who feels like saying hi to anyone else right after the show?
-
- well, i think i've taken up enough bandwidth
- hope to see y'all there!

- p.s. have xtra nye ticket, to trade for a ticket on the magic bus
