  12. Thought I'd take this time when the traffic is low to wish you all a happy
  13. holiday season and to share with my fellow guitar players a bit o' playing
  14. wisdom I've acquired.  If you don't play guitar, skip this message now.

  16. Anyhow, Foam is a fairly straighforward solo to play, but it's a lot of fun
  17. nevertheless.  The chord progression has been posted previously, but the solo
  18. works very directly from the chords: if you look at the notes of the solo,
  19. it's really just arpeggiations that outline the chord changes.  The beauty
  20. of the solo (IMHO) is how each chord leads into the next, and how the solo
  21. anticipates the chord change in such a natural way.

  31. Here's the solo to Foam by Trey Anastasio and Phish:

  33. Notation conventions:
  34. (Note: I've changed my Bend notation)

  37. /    Strike the string and bend it at the same time by the amount shown.
  38.      Bend the string until the note changes by the specified number of steps.
  39.      For example, if you see this over a note on the 3rd fret of the E 
  40.      string (a G), this sounds as an A (otherwise played 2 frets higher). 
  41.      A bend of 1 is the same as a single fret (half step on the piano)
  42.  
  43. ---+ A note that is held until the plus sign.  Usually for when you bend a
  44.      string and hold it while playing other notes.  This is drawn over the
  45.      tab and may be broken across lines.
  46.  
  47. \--/ Drawn under the tab and possibly broken across lines, this indicates
  48.      a tie.  Mostly, this is used when you strike a string and then bend it
  49.      to another note to indicate that you don't pick a second time.
  50.  
  51. (10) Implied note on the indicated fret (10, in this case).  This note is not
  52.      plucked, but usually occurs when you release a bent string but still 
  53.      let the note ring.

  55. ~    Tremallo (wiggle finger up and down or back and forth)

  61. H    Hammer on: hit the specified fret with a finger, but don't pick.

  63. P    Pull off: put your finger on the fret at the specified location before
  64.      pulling off another finger from another fret.  Don't pick.
