- I've taken talk.music.newage out of the Newsgroups: line, since this no
- longer really relates to the "New Age" religion.
-
- I had asked:
-
- > What I'm really interested in, though, is why Christian folks mentioned
- > Clannad and Enya in their discussion of the evils of "New Age".
-
- Lazlo Nibble (lazlo@triton.unm.edu) replied:
-
- > If you're expecting a rational reason, you're probably looking in the
- > wrong place. (Flaky reasons abound, of course.)
-
- I'd settle for a flaky reason. Even something like "The word 'clannad' means
- 'devil-worshippers' in ancient Aramaic" (I should point out for the benefit
- of the gullible in the crowd that this is probably not true) would be ok. If
- I said "Hey, you Christian, why do you think Clannad and Enya are evil?" I
- want to know what the queried would say; I don't particular care if it makes
- sense or is rational, as long as it's vaguely comprehensible.
-
- I ask because some of my best friends are Christians (grin), and several of
- them are big fans of Clannad and Enya, so I was at a loss to conjecture why
- Christians would find them objectionable. The "New Age religion is bad; new
- age music preaches New Age religion; new age music is bad; Clannad and Enya
- are new age music; Clannad and Enya or bad" chain, though flaky and not at
- all something I agree with, is at least understandable. But the original
- poster made it sound as if the Christians in question were citing Clannad
- and Enya as reasons why new age music was bad, not as examples of new age
- music (which had previously been proven to be bad)--in the sense of saying
- "See, these new age musicians Clannad and Enya say bad things, and they're
- new age..."
-
- Anyway, it's late and I'm rambling; to sum up, I'm looking for "things about
- Clannad and Enya to which a Christian would object," other than the fact
- that they're labeled as "new age". My motive is entirely curiosity, if
- anyone was curious. (grin)
