- Over the recent holidays, I indulged myself and made the 2+ hour drive
- to Staten Island, NY and that meca of catalog guitar sales: Mandolin Brothers.
- I hadn't been in 10+ years, when I bought my M36, and was in need of filling
- my lungs with the dust and my ears with the sounds of prewar Martins. I
- spent about 4 hours in the shop, bouncing from one OM to another 000 to
- various other fingerstyle (there's that word!) guitars, new and old.
-
- To my surprise, the guitar that made the most lasting impression was not
- the $11000 1930 OM 28 (I did, after all, need to save some change for tolls),
- but a brand new mahogany OM made by Santa Cruz. A very playable, sweet and
- crisp guitar. Well made, I thought: no glue traces or finish imperfections.
- I might have walked out with the instrument then and there were it not for
- a few other considerations (wife, three kids, mortgage, car loans and credit
- cards still dizzy from the holidays).
-
- This was my first experience with the products of the SCGC. I also
- played an Indian and Brazilian SC OM, as well as an FS. Again, the "cheaper"
- mahogany OM (at $2100), made the best impression.
-
- Ok, enough with this indulgence. Comments and discussion of Santa Cruz
- guitars, or OMs in general is welcomed (and enthusiastically encouraged).
-
- Best wishes to all in '93
- Mike
