- Hi folks,
- I am just beginning to discover jazz (which in retrospect is kinda
- surprising to me, since I have had fairly rigorous training in another
- artform with a rich improvisational technique, South Indian classical music),
- but anyway, I am looking for what the net considers a good place to start
- as far as straight-up jazz (read: not fusion) is concerned.
- In particular, I am looking for the following:
-
- 1. What are the essential CDs by the masters (Ellington, Monk, Armstrong,
- Coltrane, etc. etc.) that any jazz lover must listen to?
- 2. Who are the contemporary jazz musicians and what are some good recordings
- that I can listen to?
- 3. What recordings should an Ella Fitzgerald collection comprise of?
-
- I would very much appreciate response by e-mail only. I apologise
- if this is a frequently asked request, but obviously an issue so fraught
- with personal likes and dislikes does not have a place in the FAQ (which as
- a good net.citizen, I dutifully read before making this posting ).
