  10. Hi folks,
  11.       I am just beginning to discover jazz (which in retrospect is kinda
  12. surprising to me, since I have had fairly rigorous training in another 
  13. artform with a rich improvisational technique, South Indian classical music),
  14. but anyway, I am looking for what the net considers a good place to start
  15. as far as straight-up jazz (read: not fusion) is concerned.
  16.     In particular, I am looking for the following:

  18. 1.  What are the essential CDs by the masters (Ellington, Monk, Armstrong,
  19. Coltrane, etc. etc.) that any jazz lover must listen to?
  20. 2.  Who are the contemporary jazz musicians and what are some good recordings
  21. that I can listen to?
  22. 3.  What recordings should an Ella Fitzgerald collection comprise of?
  23.  
  24.     I would very much appreciate response by e-mail only.  I apologise
  25. if this is a frequently asked request, but obviously an issue so fraught 
  26. with personal likes and dislikes does not have a place in the FAQ (which as
  27. a good net.citizen, I dutifully read before making this posting ).
