- This isn't solo Cecil, of course; it's a trio. I take it you're not
- asking simply for solo recommendations?
-
- Cecil is not well-served by playing such short pieces, in my opinion.
- It's contrary to the way he's tended to play.
-
- More and more, though, he is incorporating his poetry into his
- performances. Whether you like it or not, the format of playing short
- pieces will cause the poetry to stand out in stark relief.
-
- My subjective impression of the music is that it's, well, off somehow,
- compared to Taylor's other recordings.
-
- If you're looking for one Cecil album, or a next Cecil album, I'd say get
- *The Eighth* on Hat Art. It's a quartet with Jimmy Lyons, alto saxophone;
- William Parker, bass; and Rashid Bakr, drums. It's a group, but a small
- group: an uncluttered setting and a clear recorded sound make it a good
- album to check out.
-
- Hope this helps,
