- I was shocked recently when I got back together with an old friend who
- went through the New School jazz program, and hung with a variety of
- the younger players in New York. One of the reasons she got out of
- New York and jazz was that she was sick of picking up the pieces of
- her friends' messed up lives. According to her, *lots* of the young
- players in New York are doing heroin steadily, including a variety of
- the bigger names. This came as a big unhappy surprise to me.
