  22. I was shocked recently when I got back together with an old friend who
  23. went through the New School jazz program, and hung with a variety of
  24. the younger players in New York.  One of the reasons she got out of
  25. New York and jazz was that she was sick of picking up the pieces of
  26. her friends' messed up lives.  According to her, *lots* of the young
  27. players in New York are doing heroin steadily, including a variety of
  28. the bigger names.  This came as a big unhappy surprise to me.
