- Yes, this one's excellent. Tracks include Bechet's Bounce and Santa
- Barbara And Crenshaw Follies. (I think this is the one that got
- shortened from the 2LP version).
-
- And now that you know that *I* like it, let the buyer beware.
-
- So, while I'm here, my own version of the Gift Suggestions For The
- Holidays:
-
-
- Sun Ra : VISITS PLANET EARTH & INTERSTELLAR LOW WAYS.
- It's a re-release on Evidence, from 1957, and it's MAHVELOUS!
- Finally, Sun Ra the way I heard him live, only better. The
- arrangements still sound fresh and original, the compositions
- beautiful, the rhythms bubbling. Next step is to buy the whole
- set, I suppose...
-
- Salif Keyta : AMEN
- A wonderful, wonderful album by the singer from Mali. It's
- pop, of course, but with a powerful touch of Islamic spirituality
- or something, I don't know. The human voices, the voices...
-
- Don Pullen & The Brazilian-African Connection : KELE MOU BANA
- Pullen's piano has a way of always evoking some combination of
- agony and ecstasy, and here it works extremely well with some
- vocals, some percussion, and lots of Carlos Ward's alto.
-
- Bobby Bradford and the Mo'tet : LOST IN L.A.
- Hey, why didn't I know about this before? I found it in a used
- CD place, started to listen, and WOW! It's a no-piano, two-bass,
- post-Ornette affair.
-
- Ivo Perelman : CHILDREN OF IBEJI
- Albert Ayler is alive and well and was reincarnated as a
- bespectacled Brazilian. And then he plays Suzanne Vega's
- Tom's Diner in a duet with an electric barimbau... Say WHAT?!
- Oh yes.
-
- Don Cherry : MULTIKULTI
- Gone out of print, so buy it for your loved ones as a collector's
- item. What can I say, I still love everything from The Donald,
- even the quirky stuff. And this one has some tracks by the
- Cherry/Ed Blackwell/Carlos Ward/Bob Stewart band.
-
- Steve Lacy : THE DOOR
- ... and Irene doesn't even sing on this one! But she plays
- a mean violin on a mystic, brooding version of Ellington's
- Virgin Jungle.
-
- Abbey Lincoln : STRAIGHT AHEAD
- Just listen to "When Malindy Sings". What more do you need?
-
-
- So that's it, one for every candle of Hanukah (Chanukkah?).
