- This is a question that has often puzzled me as well. Does anyone have any
- inside info or any good ideas?
- I believe the CDs are made from 1st or 2nd generation copies of the master
- tapes. I always wonder (except for the first two albums) who does the mixing
- on these. Do they have 4-track copies, or do they do the mixing in Abbey
- Road? Also, how come all the takes from the first album that are overdubs
- only appear in mono? Did George Martin record them in mono, and then put
- the other channel back in for stereo or something? That hardly seems
- possible or probable.
- I do know that most of this stuff seemed to leak out around the time that
- Lewisohn was in there researching for <THE BOOK>. This has caused some
- people to say that Lewisohn may have supplied tapes to bootleggers. However,
- I know someone who knows someone who knows Lewisohn (a weak connection, I know,
- but still...), and he says absolutely not. Perhaps it could've been people
- working with Lewisohn in there, but I really don't know.
- However, I still do maintain that Yellow Dog most likely has copies of
- several complete reels from Abbey Road, not just snippets. They just elect
- to not give it to us all at once. Like, I believe they have all the takes
- of stuff from February 11, 1963, but they've only released part of it, and
- in two different batches no less. But did they acquire all the stuff they
- have pretty much at one time, or do they continue to acquire new stuff
- through an EMI contact? In the latter case, they should start requesting
- some of the really good stuff. There's been very little in the way of
- Pepper and White Album outtakes - are those tapes in a different location
- in Abbey Road? Who knows?
