- Hmmm, I'd say you're making the assumption that character sex is equivalent
- to real life sex. Let me point out a couple of things. Firstly, the term
- used here was VR sex, so we're talking about sexual interaction between two
- people in their "virtual" mode. Thus, the fact that one of the two people
- was male would be, perhaps, irrelevant. Also, you completely ignore the
- concept of homosexuality, which I'm sure is present on MUD, it's not
- something likely to be left out.
- Personally, I think the study could be interesting, but the topic seems
- kind of limited. What seems most interesting to me are the concepts such as
- what real life motivators drive people into these sorts of situations. I
- mean, almost everyone I know has at least been flirted with on the net.
- Spend enough time on a crowded MUD and it just happens. MUD is like a forum
- where people can engage in social behavior with anonymity to some extent,
- and somewhat lesser personal risk.
- In a way, it has seemed to me sometimes that MUDs could even provide
- the key to curing problems such as shyness, a belief that others don't share
- the same interests, etc. It would probably have to be carefully managed
- though, as there has to be some transformation into applying this to the
- real world along with avoiding the tendency of the person to withdraw
- totally into the fantasy of the MUD environment.
- As far as females on MUDs go, the only ones I ever truely believed were
- female in real life (because they told me and I trusted them) were.
- An interesting sidenote ... Robert Charles Wilson's _The Harvest_ is
- out in hardback and the plot of the story is such that concepts of reality
- vs. virtual reality, sex/love in virtual reality, etc., are covered.
- Although perhaps not the most driving of his books so far, it is an
- interesting philosophizer(tm).
