- True, just like to Soviets used to insist that important cultural and
- propoganda events take place within countries under their control.
-
- The exception was, of course, in non-competitive events where the Soviets got
- to show off their 'artistic' achievements, like with their ballet companies.
-
- Prohibiting the tournament from taking place in ANY country is not much
- different than saying:
-
- "All Americans who engage in championship tournaments MUST play only in
- Washington, D.C.."
-
- Both are examples of the U.S. governemnt viewing the tournament, and players,
- as being under its control.
-
- Personally, I think Jane Fonda playing on North Vietnamese anti-aircraft guns
- which killed OUR people was far worse than what FIscher did. However, unless
- she sold secrets to the enemy, or something similar, I do not believe either
- she or Fischer committed a crime against the US.
