- Boris Men was the only non-titled player to compete in
- this years U.S. Championship. He got off to a great
- start, 3-1 and tied for first after four rounds, but then
- the big guys got his number, and he nose dived to 2-9
- for the rest of the tourney. I know Men because he is a
- native of Ohio, like myself, and I have competed against
- him directly in local tourneys.
-
- The first time I saw him play was as an unrated in the
- top section of the Ohio Chess Congress. He gained draws
- with Kudrin, and Rachels, and finished 5-1, state champion!
- His first rating was around 2600, and has been close to that
- ever since.
-
- Men is a quiet man, in his 40's, with striking features that
- give him a hawk like appearance. He plays off beat openings,
- Albin Counter-Gambit and the like, and as white he plays less
- than the sharpest lines, looking for small advantages and
- those sure fire errors sub-masters make with regularity. My
- one game against him was the black side of a French Tarrasch,
- where he demonstrated why black must not develop his King's
- knight to f6 (the Bishop Pin). It took me 3 months to figure
- out that was the losing move! (NM Charles Schulien pointed it out).
-
- I have the highest respect for Men, and was rooting for him all
- the way in the U.S. Championship. Although 5-10 is a dismal score,
- Men is sure to be a top player in U.S. chess for years to come.
