- BRITISH STEEL II ON SCHEDULE FOR NEW ZEALAND
-
- Richard Tudor, skipper of the dismasted British Steel II, has confirmed
- that they are on schedule to rejoin the fleet in Hobart befor the
- start of the third leg. he confirmed that they are sailing under jury
- rig and are making good progress at 5.5 knots "Our rendezvour with
- Rhone-Poulenc looks unlikely as we have received confirmation that
- the NZ Pacific has left New Zealand and we are hoping to rendezvous
- with them on Christmas Day. What a pressie! All the water tanks are
- full, no allocation of showers yet, morale high, looking forward to a
- new mast in Wellington."
-
- Race headquaters now expect the yacht to reach Wellington on or about
- the 6th/7th January. The new mast and rigging should take three to
- five days, before Tudor and his crew sail on to Hobart. It is hoped
- that British Steel II will arrive in Tasmania by the end of January, in
- good time to rejoin the fleet for a few celebrations before the
- February 13th restart.
-
- From Hofbrau Lager, Jack Gordon-Smith commented "Christmas this year
- will be a new experience for all on board, not only because we will be
- absent from our families, but also because we will be sharing it with
- a new family, with whome we have been through so much in the past few
- months. All those on board will remember this Christmas as one of
- special simplicity. Nothing has been planned, all wil be spontaneous.
- It won't contain the excesses of Christmas on land, but every little
- treat will be that much sweeter for having been preceeded by a period
- of austerity. It may be true that you need to sail to the far ends of
- the earth to really understand what Christmas is all about."
-
- Race Headquarters have assessed the detours undertaken by heath Insured
- and Group 4 Securitas when they went to the assistance of British
- Steel II last week. the recommended redress which will be put to the
- Hobart Protest Committee for decision is 16 hours for Heath Insured and
- 12 hours for Group 4 Securitas. Redress for other yachts is being
- considered..
