- Hello net bike tourers,
-
- After looking at the different bicycling news groups I decided to post
- this request for information here. I hope its the right place. :)
-
- While in jr. high I had a dream about riding across the country.
- At the time I was riding about 1000 miles a year, which I thought was
- a lot. Since that time 25 years ago I have been in an out of cycling.
- The last couple of years have been, a "back in to cycling" period,
- and I've noticed the dream I had in jr. high has returned. I'm
- riding maybe only 2000 miles a year now but I feel up for the adventure.
-
- In my dream I see myself taking a short ride out to the Oregon Coast,
- putting my left big toe in the Pacific Ocean, then riding for many, many
- days to poke my right big toe in the Atlantic Ocean.
-
- I know that alot of people do this sort of thing with just a credit card,
- buying all their meals, and staying in hotels, but this is an old dream,
- I think before they had credit cards. I imagine a leasurely tour two
- to three months, preparing my own food, and tent camping at night.
-
- I'd like suggestions on:
-
- o northern routes other than the Bike Cenetenial routes.
-
- o East coast destinations suitable for poking a big toe in the Atlantic.
-
- o considerations of weather for different months of the summer in
- different parts of the country.
-
- o how to get maps suitable for bicycling.
-
- o your basic list of "what ever you do don't forget to bring this ..."
- Clothes
- Tools, Parts
- Cooking gear
- Camping gear
- Cycling gear
- 10 essentials ???
-
- o how and where to find camping places in the middle of tim buk too.
-
- o people to talk to, or books to read, by people who have done similar
- style rides.
-
- o training hints
-
- o Bikes ... Road bike vs Touring bike vs Mountain bike
-
- o Since you're there, you might as well stop and see ...
-
- Please reply to email to John.T.Purdy@tek.com
-
- I will post a summary of info.
-
- Thanks,
- John Purdy
