- Could somebody help with the following problem?
- Car: '88 Celebrity Wagon, engine 2.8l V6 (the V6 from hell??)
- The "service engine soon" light came on. Read the code stored; it
- was 34 (MAF sensor too high). By the time I got to check it the condition
- no longer existed and "scan tool" reads 5-6 grams per second at idle which
- is normal. Driving is mostly normal but occasionally cuts out momentarily
- and then again it's OK. At idle, some times, it acts as if it is about
- to die and then suddenly the idling becomes smooth again as if the
- computer finally figured out how much gas is actually needed. Occasionally
- the SES light stays on long enough to verify with a scan tool that the
- reading is indeed high (140 grams per second, engine idling). The sensor
- is trivial to replace but quite expensive. Some questions:
- a. Is the cutting out related to code 34?
- b. How do these sensors work? Is it possible that some contamination
- causes this intermittent failure or once they start acting up like
- this they need to be replaced?
- c. Are there any third party vendors or do I have to go to a GM dealer?
- J.C. Whitney's catalog, for example, does not list any MAF sensors.
- I remember somebody posting something on MAF sensors a few months ago.
- I don't remember details but I think the bottom line was that measuring
- the air mass into the manifold was not after all a reliable parameter
- to use for the fuel delivery algorithm and that GM has either dropped
- it in newer engines or is about to drop it or something like this. If
- anyone has that post I would appreciate receiving a copy.
- Thanks in advance, Ven. Polychronakos
