- Yeah, I had similar problems with my '83 GL. What happens is, there's a
- wiring harness that wraps around the front underside of the engine. Heat
- from the engine causes the insulation on these wires to crack. The wires
- short and all sorts of problems occur. My lights would dim and get
- brighter. Anyway, the problem really manifested itself for me when I went
- to sell the car. A real nice family came over and we went for a test
- drive. We got about one mile out and all the lights went out and the
- engine died. We had to jumper the battery and I wiggled the harness to
- get it running again.
-
- Anyway, they made me an offer anyway. The next day, I took the car to a
- Volvo mechanic and he took a look at the wiring in that harness. He told
- me about the cracking problem. He said that what they do is remove the
- lower shroud, pull the offending wire(s) out of the harness, replace and
- reconnectorize them. He had a flat charge of $45 for the service. I was
- very happy.
-
- I hope this helps. By the way, the family came back and bought the car
- the next day.
-
- Good luck,
