  12. We're about to take delivery of a Plymouth minivan, so now's the time
  13. to think about endowing it with sound.  Our budget is $800-$1000, and
  14. we have no desire to build a rolling boom box.  Our tastes run to jazz
  15. (Stanley Turrentine to Woody Herman), blues (Robert Johnson to B. B.
  16. King), bluegrass, Russian symphonies, and the occasional Beatles, or
  17. Blood, Sweat, and Tears, or ELP.  We don't turn the sound levels up
  18. very high, but a lot of our music is from "acoustic" instruments that
  19. we also play ourselves, so precision is important.

  21. We plan to start with something like the Sony XR-U550 (FM/AM/Cassette)
  22. in the dash, then install decent speakers (6x9 rear, 5.25 front), then
  23. something like the Sony CDX-U300 CD changer under the driver's seat.
  24. After all that settles in, we may want to add an amp to provide more
  25. headroom than the 20W per channel we'll get from the in-dash unit.

  27. What speakers should we use?  The last speakers I liked at all were a
  28. pair of Jensen TS-6905's that were stolen three cars ago, but that
  29. design must be a generation or two old by now.  And besides, a Mustang
  30. was nothing like a Voyager, so the environment will be all different.
  31. We don't want any components or speaker enclosures that will take up
  32. any floor space or protrude from the walls in back, so a giant
  33. subwoofer cabinet is infeasible.

  35. Any other component suggestions?  What else should we be considering?
